Patrice Evra maintains Romelu Lukaku’s critics have ‘a short memory,’ but the striker made a ‘huge mistake’ leaving Inter for Chelsea.

The centre-forward cost over €115m to bring to London last summer, having won the Serie A title in Italy and reached the Europa League Final.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order, does not fit with manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactics and is reportedly eager for a return to San Siro.

“Those who criticise Lukaku have a short memory, because when he first arrived in London, he scored goals and did very well,” Evra told Voetbalprimeur.

“After he got injured and then said that he missed Inter, that created a bit of a mess with the fans.”

Lukaku by all accounts now regrets asking for the transfer to Stamford Bridge, where he had played as a teenager, after Antonio Conte left Inter.

“He wanted at all costs to return to Chelsea, but he should’ve stayed at Inter after a season at such a high level,” added former Juventus defender Evra.

“He made that choice and it was a big mistake, in my view.”

The 28-year-old has scored 12 goals in 36 competitive appearances for Chelsea so far this season.

In the 2020-21 campaign at Inter, Lukaku had found the net 30 times in 44 official matches, along with 10 assists.

  1. If you are happy where you are then stay there. If you are earning 2-4M and you have a chance to move to Chelsea to earn more then understandable, but you already have a good contract and you are 28, you should know any wrong move then your career could be nose dive downward, but these guys never learn.
