Former Milan winger Alberico Evani says Silvio Berlusconi ‘was a genius’ who ‘brought Milan to the top.’

The 60-year-old is now part of Roberto Mancini’s Italy staff and spoke to reporters, including Football Italia, on Monday at Coverciano.

“It’s a sad day for me, I am sorry for the death of President Berlusconi. He always gave me consideration and affection. A genius leaves us. He was very important for me and my Milan teammates and brought us from the bottom to the top of football,” he said.

“On his very first day [as Milan President], he told us, Milan would become the best team in Italy, in Europe and in the World and he achieved it.

“In 1993, I had decided to join Sampdoria and in 1997, when Mauro Tassotti’s wife died, we were at the cemetery. He approached me and whispered: ‘Whenever you want to return, just call me.’ Once again, he proved how much he respected me. I never did that call, but he again proved how much he counted on me.

“We received a lot from him and the club; consequently, we gave back. He put us in the best conditions to deliver and reach targets he already had in his head.”
