Ciro Immobile made history and gave Lazio the 2-1 lead in Marseille, but Olympique clawed them back with Dimitri Payet and only the woodwork prevented a French winner.
The Aquile had Immobile struggling with a stomach bug and knee issue, but he started anyway in front of a revamped midfield. Marseille had drawn all three Europa League games so far, including a 0-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
Dimitri Payet saw his strike charged down, then a free kick dipped viciously to skim the crossbar, while Thomas Strakosha needed to palm the Arkadiusz Milik header off the line.
Lazio lost Manuel Lazzari to injury after just 26 minutes, but Marseille received a penalty when Francesco Acerbi clearly pulled Milik back by the shoulder as a cross came in. Former Napoli striker Milik converted it himself, drilling low into the near bottom corner.
Deep into first half stoppages, Felipe Anderson fired in after a Luiz Felipe attempt from a corner ricocheted into his path. It was at first ruled offside, but VAR showed the Brazilian was level when the shot was taken and Lazio had their equaliser.
The Biancocelesti turned it around completely after the restart following a howler, as Saliba failed to control the Valentin Rongier back-pass and Immobile pounced, sweeping into the far corner from the edge of the box. It was his 160th goal for Lazio, making him the sole all-time record holder after surpassing Silvio Piola’s 159.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic came off the bench and threatened a third, firing over, but then Cengiz Under’s cross-shot went past everyone to bounce off the far post.
Pedro tested Pau Lopez from distance, but Marseille began to pin Lazio back and eventually got the equaliser after a series of shots were charged down, Payet blasting into the roof of the net from the tightest of angles.
It was all Marseille in the closing stages, Harit’s strike deflected wide by Luiz Felipe, then a Payet screamer from distance beat Strakosha to bounce off the crossbar.
