Ciro Immobile rattled the woodwork and had a goal narrowly ruled offside, as Lazio’s home draw with Olympique Marseille leaves the group extremely tight.
This was a must-win for the Biancocelesti, who had Mattia Zaccagni back from injury, starting Francesco Acerbi and Luiz Felipe because they are suspended in Serie A this weekend. Jorge Sampaoli’s Marseille drew both their matches and had ex-Serie A players Arkadiusz Milik, Cengiz Under, Pol Lirola and Pau Lopez.
Cengiz Under fired over from 12 yards on a Lirola cross, while Milik drilled wide and also couldn’t keep his finish down on the half-volley.
Pau Lopez had to make two saves in quick succession on Luiz Felipe, the first scrambling across to claw away a looping header, then denying the defender from point-blank range on a corner.
However, Thomas Strakosha made a sensational save with his wrist to stop Cengiz Under’s left-foot curler reaching the far bottom corner after cutting inside.
Ciro Immobile controlled a Danilo Cataldi ball over the top and shrugged off his marker, only to then fire the finish over the bar.
Immobile did have the ball in the net on 58 minutes, but had strayed marginally offside on the through ball from substitute Luis Alberto.
Cengiz Under tested Strakosha again at the near post and Dimitri Payet saw his strike deflected wide, while Mattia Zaccagni’s ferocious strike forced a tough save.
Immobile thumped the frame of the goal from a tricky angle, the top of the near post after Marseille gave the ball away cheaply.
Lazio had a flurry of activity in the final minutes, Pau Lopez with a desperate save on Pedro from point-blank range.
