Lazio have already qualified for the Europa League, but Roma, Fiorentina and Atalanta are all within one point going into the final round.

The last-gasp Sergej Milinkovic-Savic equaliser for 2-2 against Juventus last night ensured the Biancocelesti will be in the Europa League, as they reached 63 points.

It means at worst, they will finish in sixth place.

However, the rest is all up in the air, as Roma have 60 points, Fiorentina and Atalanta are both on 59.

In theory, fifth and sixth go into the Europa League, while seventh qualifies for the Conference League play-offs.

If Roma win the Conference League Final against Feyenoord on May 25, they go directly into the Europa League too.

There is one scenario where if Roma finish eighth and win the Conference League, then there will be eight Italian sides in Europe next season rather than seven.

In Serie A, head-to-head record is the first deciding element when two teams finish level on points.

If three or more sides finish level, then a mini-league table is drawn up of their head-to-head records.

Roma have a superior h2h with Atalanta, while it is totally even with Fiorentina, but they have a better overall goal difference.

The Giallorossi also have a better head-to-head record with Lazio.

Fiorentina have a superior head-to-head record with Atalanta, so they will be in Europe with a victory.

Atalanta are the only side who cannot guarantee anything, as even if they win the final match with Empoli, they could still finish eighth because of the negative head-to-head record with both Roma and Fiorentina.

6 thought on “Europa and Conference League race goes down to the wire”
  1. It’s not guaranteed that Roma will win the ECL but it would be great if they did and finished 8th so there would be 8 Serie A teams in Europe.

  2. It’d be nice to see 8 teams in Europe, but if 7 are hopeless in the CL and EL, 1 more probably won’t help lol.

  3. Age moment emotion don’t repeat itself but opportunity of time always come severally; so Roman must cements there position in the league for record don’t change and win the maiden europa conference league historically!!!!!!!!
    Up Romanisti
    Up Emperor Mourinho
    Upbritan prince of Rome Tammy

  4. I’ve followed Mourinho from Chelsea. His focus is to win conference league to play Europa not to qualify in Seria A. He did same with Man. U.He won Europa to play CL..He know Man.U won’t finish 4th.His target now is.Win conference league to play Europa. And he must win on 25th. Only Jose does that & That’s why he remains the best coach in the world. I’ve seen him doing it whenever he knew they won’t qualify through the league. Watch out on the 25th. AS Roma wins.. That’s Jose for you.

  5. Yeah, Jose has got good history of delivering when it matters. I hope 25th May doesn’t go differently. Football is dramatic, yet emotional. I wish AS Roma all the luck needed and Jose another achievement.
