Germany are through to the next phase of EURO 2024 after beating Marco Rossi’s Hungary 2-0 with Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan goals.
The tournament hosts had opened with a 5-1 thrashing of Scotland, while Hungary lost 3-1 to Switzerland.
Musiala broke the deadlock after 22 minutes after Willi Orban had seemingly resolved the situation, but he stumbled over the ball, Ilkay Gundogan pounced on the loose ball and prodded it back for Musiala.
Moments later, Manuel Neuer flew to palm a Dominik Szoboszlai free kick out of the near top corner, while Musiala’s effort was deflected onto the side-netting.
Roland Sallai had the ball in the net during first half-stoppages on the rebound from a Neuer save, but the offside flag was up, and Barnabas Varga turned a free header over the bar.
Gundogan provided the assist for the first Germany goal and scored the second himself, sweeping in first-time from 12 yards on the roll across from the left by Maximilian Mittelstadt.
Gulasci kept the scoreline down with saves on Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane, while Kimmich ensured a clean sheet with a late goal-line clearance on Orban.
