Mateo Retegui is favourite to start in the Italy attack against England at the Stadio Maradona on Thursday in the first match of the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

It kicks off at 19.45 GMT.

The Argentine-born striker is expected to make his debut with the Azzurri starting in attack alongside Domenico Berardi and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The 23-year-old, on loan at Tigre from Boca Juniors, has scored six goals in nine appearances with his club this season.

Gigio Donnarumma will start in goal for the Azzurri, with Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo starting at right-back.

Rafael Toloi, Francesco Acerbi and Leonardo Spinazzola complete a four-man defence with Nicolò Barella, Jorginho and Marco Verratti in midfield.

Leonardo Bonucci is unavailable, and the same is true of Federico Chiesa, Federico Dimarco and Ivan Provedel.

Bonucci, however, has remained with the team, while Emerson Palmieri replaced Dimarco and Marco Carnesecchi arrived at Coverciano on Monday in place of the Lazio keeper.

Serie A stars Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori haven’t been called up by England who have no representatives from the Italian league in tonight’s match.

  1. Hard to see where the goals will come from unless this new guy does it.

A draw wouldn’t be a disaster given Mancini’s limited options.
