Incredibly, Denmark take second place in Group E thanks only to their ranking, finishing level with Slovenia in every other metric, while Serbia finish rock bottom.

It means Denmark will play Germany in the Round of 16, finishing second behind England.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic was surprisingly dropped to the bench, though there were still numerous current and former Serie A players involved, including Nikola Milenkovic of Fiorentina, Torino midfielder Ivan Ilic and Udinese’s Lazar Samardzic.

Ex-Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen’s daisy-cutter was fingertipped round the base of the post and Jonas Wind had the ball in the net only after a blatant foul on the Serbian goalkeeper.

Serbia had the ball in the net on 53 minutes, but the offside flag was up for Milan striker Luka Jovic, even though it eventually went in off a Danish defender.

A Hjulmand header was straight at the goalkeeper and former Atalanta winger Joakim Maehle’s cross-shot was cleared with difficulty.

Former Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic stung the shot-stopper’s gloves from the edge of the box in stoppages, but Serbia finish bottom of Group E with just two points.

As a sign of how tight this group was, Denmark were level on points with Slovenia, had the same goal difference, same goals scored and same disciplinary record, so they could only be divided by their rankings.

One thought on “EURO 2024: Denmark 0-0 Serbia – Danes scrape second place”
  1. I could argue that this group has turned out to be a travesty, maybe even immoral. Why? : 1- the winner of the group didn’t even reach 6 pts, meaning in this whole group there was ONE match that ended with a winner.

2- other than Englands solely win EVERY OTHER MATCH was a draw, disappointing to say the least.

3- 2nd plce goes through with 3 pts, without winning a footballing match(what are we doing here?)

4- The 🍒 on top will be if Slovenia, with 3 draws and no win goes through as a 3rd team (and they likely could) instead a team that also finished 3rd with 3 pts, however, with winning a match only because they conceded more(which is a result of TRYING TO WIN a match, something Slovenia haven’t even attempted, so you get my point: What are we promoting here? Anti football????)

    Absolutely gutted ‼️
