Manuela Giugliano looked ahead to Italy’s tough Euro 2022 clash against Belgium this evening, a match which determines which team will finish second in Group D.

Only one point separates the bottom three teams in Group D, with Iceland sitting on two points and Belgium and Italy just behind on one. Should France, the pre-tournament favourites, avoid losing to Iceland, second place would be entirely up for grabs in this match.

The Azzurre have had a tough tournament so far, picking up a 5-1 loss and 1-1 draw, so a decisive showing tonight is key to keep the team’s momentum going following years of growth.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, Giugliano commented on tonight’s clash against Belgium and the mentality needed heading onto the pitch.

“This match is important. It is a play-off and the concentration is obviously there, we have to show our value and we have to show who we are, but I know this squad and I am sure it will be so.

“The hunger is great, when you start on the bench you’re never happy, but the team’s goal is to pass the group and entertain the fans. I worked to convince the coach to let me play and tonight on the pitch I want to show that I can help the team.

“I need to be more determined defensively, to go for the ball up top and then try to use my imagination to trigger my teammates up front.”

The Azzurre reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2019 and they’ll be hoping to pick up another knockout round appearance at Euro 2022 as they continue their rise.
