Austria started their European Championship in the best possible way, when Goran Pandev scored North Macedonia’s first ever goal in a major championship.

The Group C match ended in a 3-1 win for Austria, when Michael Gregoritsch and former Inter attacker Marko Arnautovic scored in the second half to settle the score.

Historic Pandev scored North Macedonia’s first ever goal in a major tournament

Veteran Pandev had equalised in the first half, as Stefan Lainer scored the opener for Austria.

Austria thus set the pace in Group C with three points from their opener, putting pressure on Holland and Ukraine ahead of their meeting tonight.

Pandev’s contract with Genoa expires this month, but the 37-year-old is focused on the national team this summer, and partnered Aleksandar Trajkovski up front.

Inter loanee Valentino Lazaro started on the bench for Austria, the same as former Nerazzurri attacker Arnautovic, but the 32-year-old entered and scored in the second half.
