President Massimo Ferrero posted a heartfelt goodbye to the former Inter man yesterday, and Eto’o has returned the favour on his Instagram profile.

“Dear Sampdoria, it was an honour to spend the last few months with you,” the forward wrote.

“I found loud, passionate, loving fans. It’s time for me to go, but I will never forget a place like Genoa, where football isn’t just a passion, but a way to keep a family together.

“A big thank you to the staff of U.C. Sampdoria who helped me to acclimatise, and gave me the opportunity to relive the pleasure of playing in Serie A.

“Of course, a big thank you to our President, a father to me, who made everything possible and believed in me from the first minute.

“I’ll always be grateful for that, like a son is grateful to his father.

“It was an honour to have worn your colours, you will be forever in my heart.”
