Gonzalo Escalante is free to become a Lazio player after he chose not to extend his Eibar contract until the end of the season.

As confirmed by Eibar this afternoon, Escalante’s five-year spell with them ends today.

The midfielder played 155 times for the Basque side, scoring 10 goals and helping them stay afloat in La Liga.

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare confirmed earlier in June that his club had agreed a deal to sign the Argentine-Italian.

Prior to his spell at Eibar, Escalante played for Catania during the 2014-15 campaign, making 26 Serie B appearances.

In theory, he could join the Aquile now as registration rules do not apply to free agents.
