Sassuolo have officially announced Alessio Dionisi as their new coach after he took Empoli to promotion.

The 41-year-old tactician was appointed this afternoon and signed a two-season contract that runs to June 2023.

His presentation press conference will be held over the next few weeks, according to the club statement.

This will be Dionisi’s debut Serie A campaign, as he spent most of his career with lower league sides like Olginatese, Borgosesia, Fiorenzuola, Imolese and Venezia.

He took the Empoli job in August 2020 and immediately took them to promotion, winning the Serie B title.

Sampdoria and Verona had also approached Dionisi, but he only agreed to leave Empoli when the Sassuolo offer came in.

He replaces Roberto De Zerbi, who has taken on a new job at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Much like his Neroverdi predecessor De Zerbi, Dionisi tends to favour a four-man defence with variable attacking options.

Empoli are expected to appoint Aurelio Andreazzoli as Dionisi’s replacement.
