Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte suggests the Premier league could learn from Serie A when it comes to officiating and VAR use after a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal.

Spurs lost the North London derby, but the turning point saw Emerson Royal receive a straight red card for his stamp on  Gabriel Martinelli’s ankle.

In his press conference after the match, Conte tried to argue that the Premier League should follow the lead of Serie A when it comes to training and evaluating VAR officials.

“I don’t like to criticise the referee’s decision. I don’t want to comment. There are images and I think everybody can think what is the best decision but I don’t want to comment itself. If I have to compare maybe there was a yellow card in the first half.

“In England it’s very difficult because they don’t have the same line,” said Conte, a phrase that points to consistency in decision-making.

“Sometimes you see situations that could be a red card or a yellow card instead. They have to work a lot about this.

“In Italy for example they go on Thursday together to look at video to try to improve. I don’t know if it happens here.”

Having said that, it is entirely likely that foul would’ve been considered a red card in Serie A as well, as it was very high and landed studs-up on Gabriel’s ankle.
