Coming off the Euro 2020 victory, Gianluigi Donnarumma was likely expecting things to continue moving forward smoothly, but instead it’s been a season to forget for the PSG man.

The 23-year-old Italian was voted Goalkeeper of the Tournament at Euro 2020 last summer and was an instrumental part of the Azzurri’s success, further proving himself on the world stage. This came against the backdrop of his controversial free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, something the Milan fans did not appreciate at all.

Unfortunately for Donnarumma, things did not go to plan in Paris; he was forced to share his starting spot with Keylor Navas, leading to only 16 Ligue 1 appearances, and his struggles with the ball at his feet were highlighted on multiple occasions this campaign.

Donnarumma made an infamous error in PSG’s Champions League collapse to Real Madrid and he was also caught out on a few occasions with the ball at his feet in Ligue 1, although he often escaped conceding in these moments. The error made against Germany in the 5-2 defeat on Tuesday further draw attention to his weak ability to play the ball, leading to torrents of further criticism.

All in all, it’s truly been a season to forget for Donnarumma, who will now be hoping to enjoy his summer break ahead of a fairly key season in the French capital, where he’ll be hoping to finally remind everyone of his quality.
