Inter and Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has been discharged from hospital after surgery to implant an ICD and has already visited his teammates.
The 29-year-old collapsed during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland and suffered cardiac arrest, requiring CPR on the pitch and a defibrillator.
After several days of tests in the Copenhagen hospital, it was decided he required an ICD (heart starter) due to cardiac rhythm disturbances.
“Christian Eriksen has been through a successful operation and was today discharged from Rigshospitalet,” read a statement from the Danish Football Federation.
“Today he also visited the national team in Helsingør – and from there he will go home and spend time with his family.”
Denmark played their second match yesterday, a 2-1 defeat to Romelu Lukaku’s Belgium.
They stopped play at the 10th minute and stood to applaud Eriksen, the fans singing as one for the player.
“Thank you for the massive number of greetings – it has been incredible to see and feel,” added Eriksen in today’s statement.
“The operation went well, and I am doing well under the circumstances. It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played last night.
“No need to say, that I will be cheering on them on Monday against Russia.”
It remains to be seen whether Eriksen can continue his playing career at Inter, as the Italian medical tests are very strict and might not allow him to play with an ICD.
Others, such as Netherlands defender Daley Blind, have been able to carry on as professional football players with an ICD.
