Christian Eriksen knew he could decide the Coppa Italia quarter-final against Milan when he stepped up for Inter. ‘It was the perfect free kick for me.’

Romelu Lukaku’s penalty had cancelled out the Zlatan Ibrahimovic opener, but extra time was looming as the Nerazzurri couldn’t get past 10-man Milan.

That is until Lautaro Martinez was brought down just outside the box by Soualiho Meite at the 97th minute.

That is until Lautaro Martinez was brought down just outside the box by Soualiho Meite at the 97th minute.

“It was the perfect free kick for me,” Eriksen told Inter TV.

“I’m really happy,” said Eriksen. “I always look to get the most out of the minutes I have available and I’m pleased to have scored from this free-kick, it was perfect for me.

“We knew that it would be a difficult match, the intensity is high in Derbies. It was tough, but we’re pleased to reach the next round.

“I dedicate this victory to my newborn daughter, my family and all of the fans.”

Incredibly, Inter had not scored a direct free kick since Joao Cancelo against Cagliari in April 2018, so this moment ended a run of 55 unsuccessful attempts.
