UEFA has given Christian Eriksen the Star of the Match after Denmark lost 1-0 to Finland in their Euro 2020 opener on Saturday.

The Dane collapsed on the pitch in the final minutes of the first half and UEFA wanted to dedicate the award to the Inter midfielder, who needed medical attention on the pitch.

The scary moments before half-time left shocked the world of football, as the TV images showed the medical staff perform CPR on the former Tottenham star, who was eventually stretchered off with a shield of teammates surrounding him.

He was sent to hospital before the reassuring messages arrived about his conditions. Eriksen was ‘awake and stable’.

The governing body of European football wanted to mark the occasion by giving the playmaker the Star of the Match award, to show their support.

“Football is a beautiful game and Christian plays it beautifully,” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said.
