Gigio Donnarumma’s agent, Enzo Raiola, insists the Italy international is the ‘best goalkeeper in the world’ and reveals he rejected Real Madrid.

Raiola, the cousin of the late Mino, who died in 2022, spoke about his client Donnarumma in an interview with DAZN. The Italy international left Milan at the end of his contract in 2021, joining PSG on a free transfer.

“The club [Milan] didn’t want to wait, so they made a decision, as we did,” insisted the Italian agent.

The Rossoneri replaced Gigio with Mike Maignan, but Raiola feels his client is better than the French international.

“Maignan is doing really well; he is the starter of France’s national team, and, as an impact, he really did something important in Italy,” noted Raiola.

“However, I wouldn’t say he is an upgrade on Donnarumma. I don’t want to exaggerate, but I think they can’t be compared right now. Gigio is the best goalkeeper in the world, all the goalkeeper coaches who have been working with him say so. To them, Gigio is a talent out of reach. Real Madrid wanted him when he was 17, but he rejected them for Milan after seeing the [Merengues’] trophy cabinet.”

Donnarumma has kept 10 clean sheets in 22 PSG games this season, conceding 20 goals. He made his senior Azzurri debut in 2016 and has already collected 60 international appearances with the Azzurri. He was Italy’s captain in the five most recent international fixtures.

Maignan has also made 22 appearances this term but conceded 26 times keeping nine clean sheets for Milan. The Frenchman’s contract at the Stadio Meazza runs out in June 2026.
