England’s second group stage match of the 2022 World Cup pits them against old foes the USA in Al Khor.
The US famously beat England in the 1950 World Cup, in one of the tournament’s biggest shocks, before Rob Green’s error gifted them a 1-1 draw in the group stages of the 2010 competition.
Despite a poor World Cup record against the US, England head into this game as favourites, on the back of hammering Iran 6-2 in their opener.
However, prior to travelling to Qatar, Gareth Southgate’s side failed to win any of their six UEFA Nations League games this season, resulting in relegation, with the Iran mauling changing that pattern.
The key question for Southgate and his players will be their ability to build on their opening game and reverse the negativity of 2022.
Only one of England’s six Nations League clashes saw the Three Lions score over 1.5 goals inside 90 minutes, with only two of them featuring over 2.5 total goals scored by both sides.
With their struggles to generate positivity, England have also had issues with keeping clean sheets. There has been just one competitive shut out in 12 months ahead of travelling to Qatar and they allowed two poor goals against Iran.
The US will be confident of causing problems for England, despite drawing a blank in their two warm up friendlies. Berhalter’s side have averaged just under two goals per game prior to that, since the start of 2022.
A 1-1 draw should keep their respective hopes of reaching the knockout stages intact with England’s final group match against Wales becoming even more crucial as the USA take on Iran.
