The Tuscans were impressive at San Siro and had equalised with Riccardo Saponara, but Luiz Adriano’s header proved decisive.

“In these games you have to bring home the result, because compliments don’t get us points,” Giampaolo told Sport Mediaset Premium.

“When you play this well, you need to make it count. I could not have asked my team for more, we are just disappointed to be left empty-handed after such a good performance.

“I am very proud of my team, especially when they play like this. Saponara is a treasure for this team and he knows it was built with him as a protagonist.”

There was a surprise first start for 17-year-old midfielder Assane Diousse.

“He isn’t even 18 yet, but has such character and quality. He was playing for the first time at San Siro and didn’t have any fear.”
