Roma are not planning to renew Stephan El Shaarawy’s contract as they look to lower their wage bill, reports suggest.

The 29-year-old Italian forward returned to the Giallorossi on a free transfer last summer after his two-year spell with Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua, signing a two-year deal worth around €6m gross per season. He featured regularly last season under Jose Mourinho, scoring seven goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.

As reported by Il Messaggero, Roma are working hard to fit the salary parameters set by UEFA and are not planning to renew El Shaarawy’s contract in a bid to further lower their wage bill. This also explains why the Giallorossi won’t offer new deals to Ante Coric and William Bianda, two players not a part of the setup under Mourinho.

El Shaarawy will therefore leave Roma next summer after his contract expires, forcing him to find a new home. The player, for his part, is willing to lower his salary in a bid to stay at the club but much depends on how his physical condition progresses across the campaign.
