El Shaarawy: ‘Roma had to do more’

Stephan El Shaarawy urges Roma to acknowledge their own shortcomings after a 2-2 draw with Bodo/Glimt. ‘It wasn’t enough and we needed more.’

Conference League | Roma 2-2 Bodo/Glimt: Controversial draw

The Giallorossi were not humiliated in the same way as their 6-1 defeat in Norway, but still had to come back twice from a goal down with El Shaarawy’s curler and the Roger Ibanez header at the back post.

“We played with the hunger to win, we went behind twice and got back on track, but should’ve been more incisive in front of goal,” El Shaarawy told Sky Sport Italia.

“We need more determination upfront to stop wasting all these chances and then ending up going behind. We wanted to make up for what happened in Norway, we played with grit, determination, but it wasn’t enough and we needed more.”

There were two clear penalties not awarded to Roma in the second half for handling offences, as there is no VAR in the Europa Conference League group phase.

Jose Mourinho focused on these errors from the officials, but El Shaarawy suggested Roma look at their own mistakes.

“I don’t think it helps right now if we cling to incidents. We need to put more quality and soul into the games to take them home. We did well to get back into it, but that’s not enough.

“I try to give my all in every game and that’s what we must all do, whether we start or come off the bench.”
