The attacker said coach Paulo Fonseca’s style of play is ‘not so different’ and stressed he will play in any role the Portuguese tactician ‘thinks is best’.

“Fonseca has a slightly different system with the central playmakers, but it’s not actually so different from what I’m used to,” El Shaarawy continued. “In other systems, I was often asked to move into the centre.

“I’m at his complete disposal and will play in the way he thinks is best.”

El Shaarawy has played 139 games for Roma already but returned after one and a half seasons in China with Shanghai Shenhua.

“It has really felt like I’ve never been away. It was great to see everyone again and I’m thankful for the confidence ant the belief the chairman, directors and everyone have shown in me.

“I want to repay that faith and belief as soon as possible.”
