Christian Maggio should’ve opened the scoring after three minutes, but failed to get his head to a Manolo Gabbiadini corner from six yards completely undisturbed.
Dries Mertens was also unlucky when unleashing a screamer that cracked against the crossbar, while moments later Jose Callejon sprung the offside trap on a Jorginho through ball only for his angled drive to clip the far post of an open goal.
Dinamo Moscow had the ball in the net with a Christopher Samba header, but was ruled offside on the free kick in an extremely tight decision.
Aleksandr Kokorin redirected a wayward effort with his chest, but again was offside and Dinamo celebrations were cut short.
Mariano Andujar had to palm a Kokorin attempt over the bar after the restart, while Gonzalo Higuain should’ve scored on the counter when Vladimir Gabulov was left stranded by a mad rush off his line, but the finish was over an open goal.
Kevin Kuranyi also turned a free header off target and Callejon fired a couple of efforts straight at the goalkeeper.
