EL: 10-man Lazio triumph

Despite having Mauricio sent off after six minutes, Lazio kept their cool to beat Rosenborg 3-1.

The Italians now lead Group G with seven points, as St-Etienne earned a shock 1-0 win away to Dnipro.

Ricardo Kishna, Stefan de Vrij, Lucas Biglia, Marco Parolo, Keita Balde Diao and Filip Djordjevic were all injured.

It was a fiery start, as within three minutes the Aquile had hit the woodwork twice in a single move. First Wesley Hoedt’s header from a corner hit the bar, then the Stefano Mauri rebound also struck the frame of the goal.

It was a fiery start, as within three minutes the Aquile had hit the woodwork twice in a single move. First Wesley Hoedt’s header from a corner hit the bar, then the Stefano Mauri rebound also struck the frame of the goal.

However, Lazio went down to 10 men after a disastrous double error from Mauricio. His first touch was heavy and he tried to recover by hacking down Jorgen Skjelvik when clear on goal. The referee considered it a clear scoring opportunity and it was a straight red card, the fourth in just 28 competitive games for the defender.

Johan Laedre Bjordal turned a free header off target from a corner, but Lazio were at least more concentrated in attack than defence and took the lead.

Antonio Candreva placed a smart through ball and Alessandro Matri timed his run perfectly to go clear, firing past the goalkeeper one-on-one.

Rosenborg almost equalised with a Santiago Gentiletti error, but Etrit Berisha got his fingertips to the Skjelvik angled drive and turned it on to the inside of the far post.

Alexander Soderlund also rattled the woodwork with a glancing header that came off the far post.

However, Lazio had the kind of quality in attack that Rosenborg lack and made the most of it to double their lead. Matri turned provider this time, rolling across for Felipe Anderson to pass into the near bottom corner.

Rosenborg did get back into the game when Skjelvik’s cross found Soderlund to rise above the crowd and nod in.

Moments later it was almost 2-2 in a repeat chance, but this time Soderlund’s header whistled wide.

Stefan Radu fell under a nudge from Yann-Erick de Lanlay and the referee opted for a penalty. Candreva’s spot-kick was well saved, but he was able to turn in the rebound.

Soderlund had the chance to complete his brace after a clumsy Abdoullay Konko tackle on Bjordal, but Etrit Berisha brilliantly saved his penalty.
