Serie A referee designator Gianluca Rocchi has identified eight incidents from the first half of the 2023-24 Serie A season which can be classified as officiating errors.

Rocchi conducted a press conference at Coverciano on Friday in response to a growing list of complaints about referees and the use of VAR over the course of the season.

According to Rocchi’s analysis, reported by Corriere dello Sport, eight incidents can be classed as refereeing errors, two of which directly involve Serie A leaders Inter. The incidents in question were the fouls by Alessandro Bastoni and Yann Bisseck in the lead-up to decisive goals against Genoa and Verona respectively.

Three separate incidents affected Juventus, one positively and two negatively. The Bianconeri should have had a penalty given against them for a foul on Dan Ndoye by Samuel Iling-Junior in a game against Bologna in August.

However, Sassuolo should have been reduced to 10 men against Juve after a foul on Bremer by Domenico Berardi. The Old Lady also should have had a penalty in their favour for a handball by Mattia Bani against Genoa.

Federico Baschirotto should not have been sent off against Monza in September and should have been shown a yellow instead.

Kristian Thorstvedt had a goal incorrectly ruled out for Sassuolo against Fiorentina last weekend for an offside call.
