Eusebio Di Francesco admitted he wanted Radja Nainggolan at Cagliari for the start of the season and revealed the Belgian could start against Benevento.

The Inter loanee has returned to the Rossoblu for his third stint at the club, as he returned to San Siro after 2019-20.

Nainggolan contributed six goals and six assists for the Casteddu last term and helped them to their best start since the Scudetto winning side in 1969-70.

Di Francesco replaced Walter Zenga at the helm last summer and admitted he would have preferred to have Nainggolan available immediately, but Cagliari and Inter didn’t reach an agreement over a permanent deal after the last campaign.

“He’s a midfielder and he must think like that when attacking and defending,” Di Francesco said at a press conference ahead of the match against newly promoted Benevento.

“Even if he doesn’t have the physical condition to play 90 minutes, he could start or enter from the bench. We’ll see.

“Radja is combative, he’s a played I wanted since the beginning of the season but I’m happy he has arrived now.

“I hope he brings his experience and personality to the dressing room.”
