Eusebio Di Francesco is increasingly frustrated after Cagliari ‘allowed Atalanta no shots on target for 70 minutes and ended empty-handed.’

The Sardinians capitulated at the 90th minute when substitute Luis Muriel squirmed between two defenders to score at the near post.

“It’s a pity, because we keep putting in these excellent performances, we allowed Atalanta no shots on target for 70 minutes, we dominated the first half, yet we once again end the game empty-handed,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“If you are concentrated for 93 minutes, then you make an error at the 94th, it all counts for nothing. It was a positioning error on the goal, but before that we had caused Atalanta huge problems and Radja Nainggolan did so well behind the strikers.

“We’re naïve and only under pressure for the final 15 minutes. Before that, we created the chances, but the final ball was often not the right one. These things happen, there are moments when it doesn’t go your way, but this moment has been going on for too long now.

“My experience must help me to clear out the negativity and learn from the positive aspects, giving us even more determination and the grit to finish chances. I liked the tactics and the movement today, we just needed a pinch more quality.”

Cagliari thought they had a spot-kick in stoppages when Marten de Roon tackled Daniele Rugani, but after an on-field review, the referee saw that the Atalanta player got to the ball first.

“Many told me it wasn’t a penalty, but we are again unfortunate when it comes to VAR, as sometimes penalties are hastily given against us and the decision sticks.

“I’ll be honest, seeing the video: it’s not a penalty.”

Does Di Francesco have a message for the fans, who showed their support to Cagliari at the training ground?

“It’s immensely disappointing, as we wanted to give them joy. The only positive is the attitude we had today, but the next match is going to be a battle and we’ve got to give it everything against Torino.”
