La Dea have had a perfect start to the season, beating Torino 4-2 and Lazio 4-1, whereas the Sardinians scraped one point from two games.

“We are certainly facing one of the Scudetto candidates,” said Di Francesco in his press conference.

“Atalanta have done very well to focus on specific types of players and the coach has proved what he can do. There’s no secret to their many goals, it’s because they are always aggressive and attacking, which also leads them to concede goals. I worry the deeper we sit, the more we’ll concede, so we must try to hurt them.

“I am not a fundamentalist when it comes to tactics and I do like to vary my options, so while I’d like to continue with this 4-3-3, we’d also be ready for a 4-3-1-2 in the absence of wingers. We are a work in progress.”

Cagliari are a work in progress and Di Francesco has made no secret of his number one transfer target: Inter midfielder Nainggolan.

“You all know we are interested, but too much has been said already. I won’t deny we are missing some elements and the club is working to make me happy.”
