There was an earthquake in the Milan area this afternoon, measured at 4.3 on the Richter Scale, but so far no damage is reported.

Residents throughout Milan and its outskirts felt the quake at 15.59 GMT (16.59 local time).

A statement from the Italian authorities confirmed the epicentre was 1km from Trezzano sul Naviglio and measures at between 3.8 and 4.3 on the Richter Scale.

It was quite a shallow quake, at 8km depth, so was felt even on the ground floor of many homes and offices.
