New Fenerbahce striker Edin Dzeko reveals he would ‘gladly have stayed’ at Inter and was ‘surprised’ that Romelu Lukaku did not remain.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international was released when his contract was allowed to run down over the summer, so he moved to Turkey for Fenerbahce as a free agent.

“I would gladly have stayed, as I was very happy at Inter,” Dzeko told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“Looking at the choice that was made with regards to me, I felt certain that Inter planned to put even more faith in Lukaku, so that not having another striker who let’s just say was as imposing as me might make him a regular in the starting XI.

“That is why I was really surprised by the fact that Lukaku did not go to Inter.”

The negotiations were in progress to make the transfer permanent from Chelsea after his loan spell, only to be abandoned when Inter discovered that Lukaku was also in talks with their arch-rivals Juventus.

Instead, in the final days of the transfer window, Chelsea agreed to loan Lukaku to Roma instead.

Dzeko is now 37 years old and spent much of his career in Italy, joining Roma in 2015 and then moving to Inter in 2021.

He has made a strong start to his Fenerbahce experience, scoring six goals and providing five assists in eight competitive games.
