Before the game, Dzeko sat down with Sky Sport Italia to discuss his best European goals.

“The Ajax goal is one of my favourites. There’s a reason why football is the most important thing among the not very important things in the world.

“For example, Riccardo Calafiori ruptured his ACL two and a half years ago and I dedicated a hat-trick to him, because it was such a horrible injury at his age.

“Despite the fact he was so young, he proved that with hard work, nothing is impossible. In the end, it was his assist that helped Roma reach the semi-final, and that is a wonderful story.”

The most spectacular goal was undoubtedly his volley against Chelsea.

“That is the most special goal, especially as it was with my left foot. Federico Fazio gave me the assist. When I retire, I want to keep watching this goal.”

Roma’s most famous recent night in Europe was their 3-0 Champions League quarter-final win against Barcelona, having lost the first leg 4-1.

“That was one of the most important goals. We had lost the first leg 4-1, nobody thought we’d reach the semi-final. It wasn’t my prettiest goal, but it was one of the most important.

“I celebrate every goal as if it was the first, that’s how I feel. People say that some goals are more important, but I see them the same way, because this is my job and the love for the goal that runs through my veins.”

Dzeko is no stranger to Manchester, having played for Manchester City.

“Another goal I’ll never forget was at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid, when I was playing for City. I scored that into the left corner, close to Iker Casillas.

“Scoring against Real Madrid, in a stadium like that, is something you remember forever.”
