Paulo Dybala is expected to wear the Number 21 jersey at Roma, despite Francesco Totti offering to give him the historic 10.

The Argentina international had his medical today in Portugal, where the Giallorossi are holding their pre-season training camp under the guidance of coach Jose Mourinho.

He is set to sign a three-year contract with option for a fourth, worth €6m per season including add-ons and performance-related bonuses.

There had been hope Dybala would inherit the Number 10 jersey, which was iconic after being worn by former captain Totti for two decades.

The 10 has not been formally retired, but nobody has dared wear it since Totti hung up his boots in 2017.

Totti himself had encouraged the idea in public and private, but multiple reports this evening including Sky Sport Italia, Il Tempo and Sportitalia are all confident Dybala will stick with 21.

It is also reported that Roma included a release clause in Dybala’s contract worth circa €20m.

Meanwhile, new signing Nemanja Matic will take the Number 8 jersey at the Stadio Olimpico, giving up the 21 he had previously chosen.
