Comparisons between Paulo Dybala and Alessandro Del Piero were often drawn over the years and now it seems the nature of their departures share similarities as well.

Del Piero spent 19 years of his professional career with the Bianconeri from 1993 to 2012, making 705 appearances for the club in total. He scored 290 goals for them in that time, winning a number of honours including a Champions League title and six Scudetti. Wearing the number 10 shirt, he was a fan favourite and well-appreciated servant of the club.

So when Juventus announced that Del Piero’s contract would not be renewed in October 2011, eyebrows were raised. Despite being 37 then, he had still been a regular in the first team the previous campaigns and was an important part of the squad. His final season in Turin saw him used sparingly by Antonio Conte and he commented later in the campaign that he was “surprised” by Andrea Agnelli’s announcement that he’d be leaving.

It’s no coincidence that the Italy legend is not on good terms with the club’s chairman. The ex-striker has never been to Turin to watch a Juventus game since he left. “Why? I don’t think we have time to explain that,” he told ESPN this past June.

Juventus wanted to part ways with him and didn’t even sit down to discuss a new contract with their legend. It’s not hard to draw parallels between Del Piero’s departure and the end of Dybala’s time with Juventus. The Argentinian forward became a star in Turin and he scored 113 goals in 283 appearances for the club in seven years of service.

Due to this, it was no surprise when reports trickled out last year suggesting that a verbal agreement had been reached between himself and Juventus regarding a new contract. Things went quiet though, and CEO Maurizio Arrivabene’s remarks to the media suggesting that a deal wasn’t for certain clearly upset the former Palermo man.

Today Dybala’s agent met with Juventus’ management to clarify his future and media reports later detailed how he would be leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer. Arrivabene announced earlier today that the club “made their choices in January”, referencing the €80m signing of Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina, and they had decided not to continue with him.

Juventus were prepared – to say the least- to part ways with Dybala as they knew that even a lower offer would push him away from the club. They probably felt that it was the right time to part ways with their No.10, just as it happened back in the days with his most notable predecessor. Dybala’s departure at the end of this season will ultimately feel anti-climatic, and if Del Piero’s experience is any indication, it will not be the warmest send-off.

33 thought on “Dybala suffers Del Piero treatment in Juventus exit”
  1. Not just Juventus, Milan treated Inzaghi, Seedorf and Gattuso with no honour. Look at Inter and Barcelona. I will admit that Agnelli is not a good guy and the club has lost its way for last few years.

  2. Ever since Marotta left Piemonte Calcio this club has been the laughing stock of Italy, both domestically and especially internationally.

  3. Uncle Z doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Milan gave Inzaghi, Seedorf and Gattuso beautiful send offs as PLAYERS.
They then brought them back as coaches during Milan’s roughest time.
They didn’t work out as coaches, and Berlusconi let them leave.
If anything those players still love the Club.
Just the other week Seedorf visited Milannelo with Klose to watch Pioli and the current lads train.

This treatment of Dybala is exclusive to Juventus.

  4. Well I’d rather see Zanilo , Fagioli , Soule and Rovela take over dybala arthur , rabiot , dybala and morata

  5. You can’t compare Dybala with Del Piero and their situations, simply you can’t! Del Piero never mentioned money when signing new contracts with Juve, Dybala showed the opposite. Del Piero was practically turned out of Juve by Conte.

  6. Well…thank you La Joya 💎

For all the magic & so far 9 major trophies in 6 seasons outshinning that Bottler CR7, who came and took a ton of cash for less succes (only 3 major trophies in 3 seasons + making the team worse season by season)

A true Juve legend up there with Del Piero, Platini, Ferrari, Bettega etc. etc.

  7. @Jack 100% with you!

And agree with most of the other comments…incomparable players. No way del should be brought into this conversation.

Interestingly enough though, if Dybala played the same amount of games as ADP, he would be just 8 goals off Il Pinturicchio’s total of 290.

  8. I don’t understand why any player wants to play for Juve. Corrupt from top to bottom, and worse still the club stabs you in the back the second they think they’ve found someone better. Seen with Del Piero, Higuain, Dybala and numerous others – you as a player just don’t matter when it comes to Juve. There’s no loyalty at all. It’s sad and it’s pathetic.

No wonder a club like that has the absolute worst fans in Serie A (and that’s saying something in a league with Roma, Milan, and Inter fans).

    Pathetic.

  9. Clown face – such a laughing stock after Moratta left that we won the scudetto in 2018-2019 and again in 2019-2020, whilst Inter couldn’t even get out of the group stages of the UCL. Unlike Inter, big clubs make big decisions and this is the right one for Juve. Can’t keep someone on 10 mill. a season who is always injured and struggles in the big games, particularly in Europe. Juve will continue to remove the dead wood and dominate once again – even a clown knows that.

  10. Frankie do not worry about what others are saying but be very concerned that PhD Max is still going to be steering the ship for another 3 years and I am sure they will hit the ice berg. Going after Rudiger, Jorginho and Pulisic will be a mistake if they rescind their contracts or come for free. It is the same old bad habits just picking for free instead of needs. Jorginho is slow, Rudiger will command big money and Pulisic is American. Team him up with Tik Tok McKennie and he will develop bad habits. I am a betting man and believe they will not win a Scudetto for at least 5 years. Forget about CL as that is a dream out of reach for at least 50 years if the format still exists. Focus on young Italians like Raspadori but PhD is the real problem.

  11. It takes two to tango but Mikkel is right – Dybala has star quality, which is the case for 1-2 others in the squad. What is there to talk about for a few mio?? and what is on the back of most juventini shirts ..probably no.10. My boys both have 2.
    What a sad sad day!

  12. This is the right move. Sorry for Dybala but he’s no comparison to Del Piero who’d won everything at his age.
To Clown Face, your beloved Inter didn’t win anything for a decade and then needed a Juventus manager to drag their sorry team to victory… And then he left when he realised the club had no structure or ambition. Total losers. So keep dreaming about that treble won after decimating the opposition with illegal wiretaps. Even this year, you’ll win nothing except being Winter Champions. Lol.

  13. what crack did the author smoke? How can you compare Alex to someone who greedy for money? Alex was not offered a contract because Juve was changing a while generation and Alex was 37 at that time. Dybala wants money for playing less than half a season. Everytime a second forward comes in, Dybala disappeared. When CR7 was in, when Higuain was in, now when Vlahovic plays Dybala is not the main striker. He was given 8+2M, which is too much in my opinion. And he still does not want to sign. Like in the famous song – hit the road Paulo, and don’t you come back no more.

  14. About time, this guy always disappear when CHL knockout starts, who cares about serie A, its so trash, we wiped the whole country for 9 years straight

  15. Dybala asking for a raise at the wrong moment. New management, new policies, bazzinga-level salary distribution scheme, and fked up economy. The management keeps giving false hope and that’s not cool, sort of street level-low life criminal thug tactics. It’s unpleasant and pretty similar to what ADP went through but not the same. What they did to King Alex was much much more painful than this.

  16. My ‘hatred’ to Juve starts with Alex Del Piero – Pippo combo. It was just such an amazing combo and put a lot of fear into non Juve fans. I was actually pissed at how Juve treated ADP towards the end of his career, but yeah Juve is run like that.

Dybala is an excellent player, but despite all the titles he had with Juve, IMHO, he is just not at ADP level.

  17. lol @Frankie, you nailed that clown. It’s funny how he’s still forcing the idea to everybody that mediocre Marotta is some kinda Football God. 🤣

  18. Like little spoilt brats with unlimited cash – No player will ever make Juve great, it is Juve that makes great players – Fino alla fine, forza Juve!

  19. Del Piero was finished. Dybala was offered a new contract in line with his current but with low agent fees. His agent was more important to him then Juve.

  20. Just the usual story about how Juventus mistreat their legends and loyal players. For disloyal, corrupt and cheating organisation like Juventus, this is what to expect.

  21. This case should serve an example for any player considering a juBentus offer:

No matter how many goals you score, you will be dumped.
