Paulo Dybala played his first game in the Roma jersey, but it was a 1-0 defeat to Serie B side Ascoli.

This was not an official pre-season friendly, as it was played behind closed doors at the Trigoria training ground.

Some details still leaked out, including the fact that Dybala was in the starting XI of a 3-4-1-2 formation, used as the striker alongside Stephan El Shaarawy, with teenager Cristian Volpato as the trequartista.

It was the first time Dybala has played with his new teammates, although he is expected to make his ‘real’ debut in a friendly against Antonio Conte’s Tottenham on Saturday at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa, Israel.

Jose Mourinho continues to experiment, using Matias Vina in the three-man defence rather than as a wing-back.

New signing Zeki Celik was placed on the right side of the four-man midfield.

The game was decided by a single goal from Eric Botteghin.

Roma: Svilar; Mancini, Kumbulla, Vina; Celik, Matic, Bove, Spinazzola; Volpato; El Shaarawy, Dybala

  1. when season comes Svilar, Bove wont be getting any mins. I think Matic will be used more for rotation when Roma is winning he comes in for Wijnaldum or Pellegrini to just close out the game…
