Paulo Dybala’s tears on the Roma bench were not just because he will be out for several weeks, but also as his participation in the 2022 World Cup with Argentina is at very serious risk.

The forward converted the winning penalty in this evening’s 2-1 Serie A victory over Lecce at the Stadio Olimpico, but did not celebrate.

He immediately felt something pull in his left thigh and began hobbling badly, then limped straight over to the touchline for a substitution.

It was a freak injury that he sustained while taking the penalty and he sat on the bench with tears in his eyes, a large ice pack strapped to the inside of his left thigh.

Roma coach Jose Mourinho confirmed to DAZN after the game that it is “unlikely” Dybala will play for his club again in 2022.

The extent of the damage now needs to be ascertained, because Argentina begin their World Cup campaign on November 22 against Saudi Arabia.

That is just over six weeks away and there is the very real risk Dybala will have to miss the tournament.

It is only the latest in a long list of muscular injuries that Dybala has struggled with over recent years, which is one of the reasons why Juventus let him leave as a free agent.
