Denzel Dumfries has no problem taking on the mantle of Achraf Hakimi at Inter. ‘I’m a wide defender and I like to attack a lot.’

The wing-back made the transfer from PSV Eindhoven for €12m plus another €2.5m in performance-related bonuses.

“The feeling is amazing,” he told Inter TV. “I’m very happy to join the champions of Italy. It’s a big opportunity for me and I’m happy to be here.”

The Dutch international is considered the heir to PSG-bound Hakimi and admits there are similarities in their approaches.

“I’m a wide defender and I like to attack a lot. I think I’ll fit in at Inter as they play with five at the back, as I have done with the Netherlands.”

Those are big shoes to fill, as Hakimi scored seven goals and provided 10 assists in 37 Serie A games last season.

There is also a tradition of Dutch talent that has impressed over the years at San Siro and someone ready to help Dumfries settle in.

“Stefan de Vrij is a good friend of mine and we’re from the same city. I know him very well. I’m happy that he’s here and that we’re now team-mates.

“I know which Dutch players have played here before. It’s an honour to join them on the list.

“I hope we can have a great season, maybe win another league title and do well in the Champions League. I can’t wait to get started. Forza Inter!”
