Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries faces Genoa tonight, so he received a very special gift from the local authorities – as long as he avoids repeating this terrible pesto howler.

The Serie A match kicks off at Marassi at 20.00 GMT.

With the Nerazzurri squad in the team hotel in Genoa, Dumfries received a special visit from the Regione Liguria local authorities with a special gift.

They handed the Netherlands international a food package with the finest ingredients the region can offer, including oil, wine and basil leaves.

There was also a pointed message: ‘Dear Denzel, we are happy that you like pasta with pesto so much, but please, don’t put chicken in it anymore.’

This was after Dumfries revealed to the UEFA website that he had infuriated his Inter teammates by adding chicken to his pasta with pesto.

“To them it was an insult to pasta. I will not do it again.”

Genoa is the home of pesto, so if he tried that here, Dumfries might be expelled from the region for crimes against Italian food.
