Inter and Netherlands defender Denzel Dumfries says he does not like to ‘point the finger’ but ‘something happened’ and made him react causing his red card in a tense World Cup quarter-finals clash with Argentina.

The Netherlands international saw red following a penalty shootout that sent the South Americans to the semifinals in Qatar.

Videos and pictures emerging on social media paper to show Dumfries trying to disturb Argentinean players, including his Inter teammate Lautaro Martinez before taking their penalty kicks in the shootout.

“You try to disturb each other, but it goes back and forth,” Dumfries told Voetbal International.

“I don’t like to point the fingers at other players, but I had my reasons. I don’t know if that was smart but Something happened that made me react.”

The Dutch defender joined Inter in a €12m deal from PSV in 2021, replacing Achraf Hakimi who had joined PSG for €68m plus add-ons.

Last night’s match between Argentina and the Netherlands ended with a massive brawl involving players of both teams with the South Americans reacting to the Dutchs’ taunts and celebrating to their faces.
