The Italian newspapers were left unimpressed by the work of Bayern Munich star Harry Kane in their unexpected 1-0 loss to Lazio in the Champions League.

The Biancocelesti edged out a possibly decisive victory over the Bavarian outfit in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday evening, securing a win after a second-half penalty from club captain Ciro Immobile, a moment that ignited the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio now have a few weeks to prepare for their second leg clash with Bayern, scheduled for March 5th at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Thomas Tuchel has started to come under increased pressure and rumours suggest he could be dismissed if the German side fail to progress in the Champions League.

Star striker Harry Kane did not have a positive evening in Rome, failing to contribute much of note as his team suffered their shock defeat.

La Gazzetta dello Sport believed the English striker to be one of the more disappointing Bayern players in their loss to Lazio, writing: “At the start he didn’t exploit the chance and usually doesn’t make those mistakes. Negative sign of an evening that continued without any fanfare.”

Corriere dello Sport were marginally more forgiving than their Milanese counterparts, commenting: “The number one threat for the Lazio defence had a rather dull evening, with a good ball received at the start of the match sent over the crossbar. In the rest, Sarri’s defenders limited him as best they could.”

Tuttosport took stock of Kane’s performance across the match, underlining his limited contributions, writing: “A high shot, his business card. Then a first half with a lot of languor. He survived it by helping out his teammates, without ever stopping. In the second half he felt abandoned, he spent it away looking for something that never came.

“Romagnoli and Gila didn’t allow him to appear in Provedel’s area. He picked up a foul at the end, took charge of taking the free kick, slipped with his supporting foot, and it was deflected sky high. It wasn’t the luckiest evening of his career in the Champions League.”

Harry Kane ratings in the Italian newspapers

  1. I hope Lazio can keep it together in the return fixture. It’s going to be difficult as Bayern will throw everything at it. I imagine it will be 3 – 0 to Bayern
