Roma have reportedly set their sights on Douglas Luiz, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Corentin Tolisso but can only sign one if at least one player leaves.

The Giallorossi won the first two Serie A games of the season against Fiorentina and Salernitana and are the highest spenders in Italy so far.

However, José Mourinho expects a new signing in the last 24 hours of the summer transfer window.

“When I look at the bench, I feel we might need some more experience, and there are stronger squads than ours, but I am remarkably happy to be working with these lads and when we play against the bigger clubs, we will play to win,” the Special One said after Roma’s win over Salernitana last night.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Serie A giants want to sign a new centre midfielder to strengthen the team in the middle of the park.

Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, 23, is reported to be the Giallorossi’s priority, but they won’t be able to afford his signing for €30m unless they sell one of their midfielders.

Roma also need to cut their wage bill and director Tiago Pinto is trying to find a new club for Javier Pastore, Gonzalo Villar, Steven Nzonzi and Amadou Diawara.

According to the report, Roma could pay €30m if they one or more of these players for €15m, but with little more than 24 hours remaining before the end of the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen how the Giallorossi could complete all the operations.

Axel Witsel is also mentioned as a possible target for Roma, but Borussia Dortmund’s assistant coach Rene Maric denied that the Belgian would leave.

Witsel sees his contract expire in June 2022 and the same is true of Tolisso, while Loftus-Cheek’s contract with Chelsea ends in 2024.
