Douglas Costa has written a public apology “to Juventus fans” after he was sent off for spitting at Sassuolo’s Federico Di Francesco.

The incident was caught on camera in stoppages and the VAR booth signalled down that he had to be dismissed.

It’s likely to be at least a three-match ban, if not more, as he also raised an elbow at the same player and attempted a headbutt before the spit.

“I want to apologise to all the Juventus fans for this over the top reaction I had during today’s game,” wrote Douglas Costa on Instagram.

“I also apologise to my teammates, who are always by my side, in good and bad times. It was ugly, I am aware of that and I apologise to everyone for that.

“I want to make clear that this isolated conduct has nothing to do with what I’ve shown throughout my career.”

Juventus Coach Max Allegri confirmed the player will be fined.

It probably won't help his cause that he didn't apologise to Di Francesco in this message.
