Former Napoli defender Andrea Dossena was apparently arrested in London under suspicion of shoplifting, but his agent offers clarification.

The 33-year-old, who joined the Partenopei from Liverpool in January 2010, is reported to have been arrested yesterday evening at Harrods, on Brompton Street, along with a 31-year-old woman believed to be his girlfriend.

The news was originally relayed by the Liverpool Echo, which also reports that the couple were released on bail, pending further enquiries in late April.

However, the player's agent has since released a statement seemingly offering clarification, saying the Leyton Orient man's son had taken some books.

"It was a family shopping trip to Harrods and their little boy was carrying his own bag," Gary Sloane said.

"He put a kids' book in there and it set the security alarms off as they left the shop.

"Andrea and his wife didn't have any ID with them so they had to go to the police station just to verify who they were."
