The 32-year-old ex-Liverpool winger struggled for playing time in Naples and joins Salvatore Aronica in making the January switch to Sicily.

“I had three fantastic years at Napoli, as Walter Mazzarri wanted me and really counted on my support. Unfortunately, with Zuniga’s arrival I found less and less space, so I decided to look elsewhere,” said Dossena.

“I want to thank Palermo for deciding to focus on me. Their tactics suit my characteristics and I hope they will take up the option to make my move permanent, but the club will decide that in June.”

By a trick of fate, Dossena could make his Palermo debut against Napoli at the San Paolo on Sunday afternoon.

“It will be a very emotional challenge for me. If I were to score at the San Paolo, I don’t know how I’d react. Morgan De Sanctis is a friend… More than celebrate, I think I’d burst out laughing!”

Dossena has scored only five Serie A goals in 169 career appearances.
