Gigio Donnarumma ended a terrible week with a straight red card just ten minutes into PSG’s Ligue 1 clash with Le Havre on Sunday, but Luis Enrique defended the Italy international after a 2-0 win.

It wasn’t a memorable week for Italy star Donnarumma, who took centre stage in PSG’s 2-0 win over Le Havre on Sunday for all the wrong reasons. Gigio was sent off in the early stages after wiping out Josue Casimir outside the PSG box. It didn’t affect the Ligue 1 giants too much as Kylian Mbappé and his teammates still managed to secure an away 2-0 victory.

Gigio’s red card is only the latest incident of a terrible week for the Italy international.

The previous league fixture had seen the ex-Milan keeper gift a goal to Monaco’s Takumi Minamino while, three days later, Donnarumma was blamed for Newcastle’s opener in a Champions League fixture at the Parc des Princes. The Italian had saved a Miguel Almiron attempt but failed to hold the ball, paving the way for Alexander Isak’s goal.

RMC Sport highlights that Donnarumma’s errors have ‘multiplicated’ since his move to PSG in 2021, even mentioning a controversial Real Madrid goal scored by Karim Benzema in the Champions League Round of 16 in 2022, which led to the Merengues’ comeback and their eventual qualification to the quarter-finals.

Luis Enrique still defended the Italy international after Sunday’s win over Le Havre and Gigio’s red card.

The Spanish coach said there are “no problems” with Donnarumma and added: “I see a defensive error more than a goalkeeper’s mistake. I ask the goalkeeper to cover, so if someone is responsible, it’s me. Most of the time, it goes well. When it doesn’t go well, the problem is with me.”

Luis Enrique has not put into question Donnarumma’s starting status at PSG, but according to RMC Sport, Gigio’s recent errors ‘inevitably raise questions for the rest of the season.’
