Gigio Donnarumma’s mental coach Nicoletta Romanazzi explains how she prepared the Italy and PSG star to boos from Milan fans at San Siro and insists the 25-year-old loves the Rossoneri.

Romanazzi released an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport explaining how she’s been working with the former Milan keeper and how Gigio prepared for home Italy games at San Siro.

Donnarumma played twice with the national team in Milan after leaving the Diavoli, and Milan supporters booed him both times. They still haven’t forgiven the Italy international for joining PSG on a free transfer in 2021. Gigio also returned to San Siro with the Ligue 1 giants in November 2023 in a Champions League group stage game won by the Rossoneri.

“He has a strong bond with Milan and Milano and I knew that the reaction from those who had been his fans for six years would hurt him,” said Romanazzi.

“I tried to make Gigio understand that the more fans were angry the more love they’d show. It was the reaction from somebody who felt betrayed.”

So, what did she tell Donnarumma?

“I told him to take a piece of responsibility and welcome that reaction. This entirely changed his perception of that situation. What I tell men is to pull out their female side to be more creative and flexible and anticipate what the opponent will do. Of course, they also need the male side with structure, discipline, willpower, and passion. Both sides are fundamental.”

Donnarumma joined PSG on a free transfer after the end of his contract with Milan in 2021.

He was the Italy captain in five games from six under new Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti, including the latest match played at San Siro against Ukraine in September 2023.

  1. I never understood it! For years, he was the one shining and consistent light in that team! He gave everything for the club! He had every right to decide his future! He wasnt the calhanoglu type! He deserves respect!
