Fans and pundits react to Italy’s draw against North Macedonia by questioning Gigio Donnarumma’s starting status and discussing the supposed ‘lack of talent’ in the Azzurri squad.
The Azzurri were held to a 1-1 draw by North Macedonia on Saturday in Luciano Spalletti’s debut as Italy coach.
Italian sports papers blamed Gigio Donnarumma following the draw in Skopje and many fans and pundits share the same view. At least, this is what emerges by reading comments on X.
Donnarumma conceded North Macedonia’s equaliser at the near post and many highlight that Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario should become the Azzurri’s starter between the sticks in the following matches.
Italy will face Ukraine in a key Euro 2024 qualifying fixture at San Siro this coming Tuesday.

CBS pundit Matteo Bonetti asked: “Remember when we had generational talent?” posting a picture of the Azzurri at the 2002 World Cup featuring the likes of Paolo Maldini, Gigi Buffon, Christian Vieri and Francesco Totti.
Others highlighted that the Azzurri lack talent, but The Athletic’s James Horncastle disagreed: “Five of the XI played in the Euro 2020 final, five in European finals in June. Sure it’s not 90s standard, sure it’s not two years ago, still…”
