Gigio Donnarumma is happy with Italy’s performance and but admits he didn’t know he had never saved a penalty for the Azzurri in regular time.

Gigio saved a penalty kick after just three minutes, contributing to Italy’s 2-1 win over Venezuela on Thursday.

“We are happy with what we are doing and the situations we are creating,” said the PSG keeper.

“Of course, there are some things we must fix, but the more time we have available, the better. We’ll have time to prepare for the most important games. These matches are useful for forming a group, getting to know ourselves, and creating an important group for June.”

Venezuela proved to be a tough side and the game seem a friendly.

“Not at all, they are a physical side. In the mentality of South American teams, there are no friendlies. We must have the same attitude and play every game as a final,” argued Gigio.

“We know they keep a high pace and we know we must be on the same level. We are happy with the performance. It was an intense match. They made many fouls, but we held tight, so we are happy.”

Donnarumma was Italy’s hero in the penalty shootout against Spain and England at Euro 2020, but he had never saved a penalty kick for the Azzurri during regular time.

“I didn’t know it! They just told me,” he admitted smiling.

“I am happy with what we are doing and I am happy with the team,” he concluded.

Donnarumma was the Azzurri captain against Venezuela tonight. He has already made 60 appearances with La Nazionale, winning the Euros three years ago as the best player of the tournament.
