Gianluigi Donnarumma was furious with Italy’s performance, but also the interviewer after a 5-2 Nations League loss to Germany. ‘If you want to cause controversy and blame me, then fine, I’ll take that.’

It was an embarrassing night for Italy in Monchengladbach, crushed 5-2 by Germany and dominated throughout the match.

The score was 5-0 until late consolation goals from Willy Gnonto and Alessandro Bastoni, both finding the net for the first time in the Italy jersey.

Nations League | Germany 5-2 Italy: Embarrassed in Gladbach

“We are angry. There are no excuses, we have to get back out there and prove this is not us. There are simply no excuses,” Donnarumma told RAI Sport.

“We were lacking everything tonight. There was also some fatigue after four games in 15 days at the end of the season, but we don’t want to seek alibis. Now we will look each other in the eye and analyse everything.

“We’re really disappointed for the fans, for what they saw tonight. We had a few chances, but it’s not good enough. We’ll analyse everything and start again.

“All of us made mistakes. I could’ve dealt with the situation better at 4-0 and kicked it away, but you learn from mistakes and grow. Now we just have to rest and come back much stronger than this.”

There was some real irritation from Donnarumma with the interviewer when she pointed out it was ‘not the first time’ he had struggled with back-passes and playing out from the back.

“When did it happen before? When I was fouled against Real Madrid? If we want to cause controversy over these things, then fine, I am here to talk for the team. If you want to blame me, fine, I’ll take the blame, I am the captain and I keep going with head held high.

“I think you’re all trying to create something about these errors, fine.”

Donnarumma was also very angry with Kimmich after the final whistle, because the midfielder tried to lob him from midfield with the last kick of the game when it was already 5-2, something the PSG goalkeeper considered to be disrespectful.

It was the first time the Nazionale had conceded five goals since May 1957 against Yugoslavia in the Central European International Cup.

  1. I am so happy for Dollaruma so happy
    He is disrespectful person
I don’t know how they still keep him on team

  2. The sad truth is donnarumma ruined his career leaving milan. You had people who loved you, never put you under pressure to let you perform at your best and you became one of the best gks around. One year at psg and you’re the laughing stock, now they cal you overrated and you’re infuriated. Money isn’t everything sometimes and I can’t stress this enough for any player on any team. If you’re playing your best football and you’re loved, why leave?

  3. I’m shocked at Mancini more . How can you change the squad so much and keep an already low confidence keeper in nets against Germany who puts a World Cup squad on the field. I’m shocked he’s dumb enough to do that. No blame on donnarumma, he was set up In my view … why not put the sub goalie from Tottenham or other lol. It’s insane and he knows that Donna would get smashed with this squad who never even played with each other for the most part. What a poor decision and idiotic decision by Mancini
He’s the one to blame . The Cup is useless but he’s really gonna do a number on Donna form this game . This is gonna ruin his confidence and stats badly

  4. Didn’t see the match and glad I didn’t.
    My word.

Can’t disagree with the comments except one of them — you may think it’s a worthless competition but these Results have an impact on Rankings and then future Seedings. As well, Winner of the Group has a backdoor chance through a Playoff to the subsequent World Cup or European Championships if Results in Qualifiers don’t go right. In this case, this UNL edition for the 2024 European Championships. Suggest learning what is competition is before you label it useless. Case in Point, how do you think Scotland got to a Playoff to qualify for Euro 2020?

The trophy at the end is nice as well. It’s shiney.

But yes, moving from Milan and then finding himself playing barely 40% of the matches at PSG has affected him. This is undisputed. Navas also had the backing of the PSG room. Keep in mind that the language spoken in the PSG Dressing Room is Spanish, not French.

  5. Gifts the ball straight to the opponent to score, then proceeds to get irritated at a question. The audacity…

I’m not saying he was at fault for the other goals and he did make some good saves, but a great goalkeeper could’ve saved the first and third German goals.

  6. These games are there to build cohesion amongst the team to play in unison.
I see alot wanting and hoping for us to win this group. I don’t as it could potentially steal away more competitive games for a team in building.
Yes the result was awful but the 3 games prior showed hope
And I agree with the man who’s comment I believe is deleted
    @1957 bring back balotelli

  7. I don’t blame anyone for today. Italy don’t need a total rebuild. Balotelli up front and a couple of fresh players would have been enough take out Germany today.

  8. Yes, let’s bring more non-Italians in their football.

How is this deemed acceptable? What other nation besides England’s Premiership are domestic players down to a paltry 33%

  9. I seem to remember he was improving with his legs when he was in Milan, and looked more confident and sharper but now he lacks them, his brother is no longer their to guard him, his loving teammates are gone, only a pack of mercenaries who will blame him for their own failures….

  10. Milanellofm – No the fact of the matter is the Milanisti are trying to ruin him. You cut off y our nose to spite your face because he left. Talk about being Salty AF. I’ve never seen a group of fans make winning look so bitter.

  11. The blame lies strictly with the Italian football federation, they need to set limits of foreign players in Serie A, incentivise clubs to develop their youth academies and encourage clubs to field 2 young gifted Italian players per season, this would help develop a really strong National team, let’s face it they can’t compete financially with the premier League, therefore makes sense to develop our own players

  12. Br, please spare me the sanctimony. Literally, who boos the national team goalkeeper during a national game?

The Milanisti! Now that’s CHILDISH. Beg to differ?
